Hi, I’m Armando
Welcome to my little space on the internet. I’m Armando and this is my journey, and vulnerability, through sobriety. I hold many titles in my life; son, brother, Uncle (that’s my favorite one). I have had many titles in my career as well; server, bartender, supervisor, manager, director, and sommelier (Somm).
I am a Level 2 Sommelier. An achievement that was not easy to obtain, so I carry it with pride. I did it to advance my career in the Food & Beverage/Restaurant industry and something that helped me a lot. I enjoy wine and all aspects of it, from the viticulture (the growing of the grapes) to the viniculture (making of the wine). The science behind the placement of the grape vines, soil, sun, elevation, etc and all the impacts that have on the flavor of the grapes. To the process (and science) of wine making with those grapes to preserve phenols or compounds that help create the experiences we have with the 5 senses when enjoying said wine. I truly do nerd out about wine. This passion for wine evolved into passion for different types of alcohol as well, like bourbon and whiskey, vodka, gin, etc. Really the whole alcohol world became my career.
I started managing bars and restaurants and at one point was essentially a Food and Beverage Director for a small hotel (they didn’t have the budget to give me the title, but I did all the duties). Management had benefits of tastings, launch parties, signature events and events that included free alcohol. During the pandemic I worked for a liquor store where I once again was provided free wine each month and had access to a large variety of alcoholic products at a cheap cost to me. All this to say, I consumed a lot and built up quite a tolerance.
It was when I was blessed with the title of Uncle that my world changed. Having kids was not in my stars but being an Uncle is the better solution anyway. This one title had me thinking about my life, my habits and reflecting on my relationship with substances. I used to be a heavy smoker, and when the pandemic hit I quit smoking (mostly because I couldn’t afford it being out of work in the beginning). I thought about how giving up smoking wasn’t the easiest but it wasn’t the hardest thing either, so it made me think about my relationship with alcohol. I thought I had a handle on it and was something that wasn’t going to be a struggle. Then there were moments that I had what I called rolling blackouts and those are not good (we’ll talk about those one day). So for 2 years I struggled with my relationship with alcohol, turning to it cope with different things.
Then the BIG 4-0 hit (Yes, I am 40) and I knew I needed to make some major changes in my life. I had already started back in school, I had shifted careers out of Food & Beverage and Restaurants, so the next reasonable area to address was my health. That’s when I knew I had to make the cut of alcohol.
That brings us to now. My birthday was in November and so I figured I would give myself a last "hoorah" through the end of the year and started this journey formally on January 1, 2026. So again, I welcome you to my little slice of the internet.
What to Expect
This space will be forever evolving as we do as people, but there will be some things that will be consistent. There will be a daily (mostly) blog of my journey. It is a way of holding myself accountable, being vulnerable, and to help others who may be going through a similar experience feel seen. Soon to come will be recipes. There will be food recipes, cocktail recipes (I have been a bartender for 20+ years now) and mocktail recipes. My Goal is to have a mocktail counterpart to every cocktail so everyone has something to enjoy. There will be a social media counterpart to everything as well (Instagram and TikTok to start) if that is a better way for you to follow the journey. Everything is going to start in a text and photo only format but I hope to evolve it to include video formatting too (I have to get over my stage freight). One thing I can promise is that this will not become one of those blogs littered in ads; there will be a way to support this journey in the future so we can expand and try new things but that is a future evolution.
